The Pop-up Globe is a Shakespearean theatre constructed at Ellerslie Racecourse. It’s built just the same as the original Globe Theatre, so has tiered seating with a Groundling option and Royal Rooms. They are performing 4 shows: Othello, Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing and As You Like It. I went with my boyfriend, parents and family to As You Like It and we all really enjoyed it.
It’s a comedy and was really funny, both in the traditional Shakespearean language and with modern references. As is tradition, As You Like It was performed with an all male cast, which certainly makes things interesting. They interact with the audience, which makes you feel part of the theatre, rather than just being performed to.
We sat on the second level of tiered seating, so we had a downward view of the stage. I’d recommend that if you want to be seated since you can see the whole stage and not just the front. The seating is constructed with scaffolding, so there are a few bars to look through, but nothing that actually blocks your view. However, if you want to pay a lower price and don’t mind standing, the Groundlings looked like they were having just as much fun, although a couple of them got pulled up on stage. Most of the performing does happen at the front and the stage isn’t too high, so they would still see mostly everything.
It was a fun evening, which I’d definitely recommend if you’re even mildly interested. They perform daytime shows too, and also offer theatre tours. The shows don’t end until mid May, so there’s plenty of shows left to go to.
