The Grown Up keeps you guessing from start to finish. I like it’s quick twists and turns, to the point where I just didn’t know what to believe. It’s only 67 pages long, but there was a twist on nearly every page, at least that’s how it felt.
I wouldn’t even want to reference the ending except to say it was unexpected. This story was suspenseful, devious and mind-melting. I think I’ll pick it up again in 6 months and just read it again and see what I think of it then.
The characters are surprising deep for such a short story, but that’s what makes it work, to be mesmerized by all of these things happening around these complicated people.
If you love a good story, a mystery, a villain, or just love Gillian Flynn’s work, pick this up. It was also featured in a collection by George RR Martin, so if you love his work, it has his recommendation too.
